Dusk on a Rooftop

Vanya had not left the Phoenix Bluff for an entire week, excepting the one afternoon she had gone back to the church to get her cooler full of... food and the remainder of her ammunition.

Jeimu - the healer - had been remarkably understanding of the fact that she was quasi-nocturnal and slept a good part of the day. What was even more remarkable was that she and Vic had actually gone to the trouble of blacking out the windows of the room she had appropriated, and that one night she awoke to find that Jeimu had prepared a rather luscious-tasting blood pudding "just because". All of this and they'd not even charged her a penny yet.

For all her sleeping during the day she had kept a watchful eye on Kurt and Joy. The winged woman had improved steadily over the past week, and Vanya was - dare she say it - relieved and pleased that she had made it through. Nonetheless Vanya herself had elected to just stay in the background and not involve herself with them too much. They may, after all, resent what had helped them.

So she crouched on the peak of the roof, watching the sunlight die away in a magnificent blaze of orange that cast on her pale skin. Twilight didn't burn like the daytime did; and besides, the orange glow made everything look magical.

She wondered what she would do with herself from now on. There had been that man in that Cafe... but she didn't even know what to even call that situation, much less what to do about it.

There was a soft thump behind her as Joy leaped up onto the roof and stood to watch the sunset with her dark wings half-furled, the winter wind blowing her shoulder-length hair back. The Wust Fee wore nothing more than the same halter top and shorts that she had come to the island in, yet showed no reaction to the chill in the air that brought steam from her breath.

Vanya turned and smiled. "Good evening."

Those back eyes turned toward her as Joy twitched her ears in her own smile. "Guten Abend, Miss Alucard. How're ye doin'?"

"I'm well, thank you." Vanya looked the admittedly strange woman up and down. "You don't find it cold?"

Not that she herself did or anything.

"I dinnae." She crouched as the sun vanished, mantling herself in her wings. "Why, is't?"

Another smile. "I don't know either. I just know that it's wintertime, and that generally means human beings are cold."

"Shortly after me Tante died I found me'sel' at a place called t' Lunatic Cafe," said Joy, then paused and looked up. "Tis easier tae tell a tale if both be at t' same level."

"The Cafe." Vanya smiled, sitting down on the roof and looking over at Joy. "I've been there. Do continue."

The winged woman thought, carefully picking her words. "Kurt... vas heartbroken vhen I saw him first. I didnae like t' see 'im so, so I left 'im a note 'n me teleporter 'n met 'im in a meadow with intentions 'o speakin' tae 'im."

"Sounds... nice." Vanya drew her knees to her chin and turned entirely toward Joy, giving the other woman her full attention.

"His sorrow 'n loneliness called tae me, 'n then ve found arsels drawn back t' me haem." Joy remembered those days, and longed for the peace of the World Outside Time.

"I understand." She thought back to that meeting with Daniel in the Cafe.

She understood a lot more than she'd ever let on.

"Can you get back home?"

"D'ye find yersel' thinkin' 'o 'im at the dangdest moments, 'n bein' cheered by it?"

"Like right now, you mean?" She smiled. "Actually it frightens me."

Joy's ears twitched in a smile. "'N does it feel as though ye've foond a peice that ye didnae ken vas missin'?"

She nods, silent.

Because it was true - it was all true, and she didn't even know she had the capacity to feel that way about anyone.

"'N...." Joy blushed. "Air theer times ye dinnae think it safe t' be in the room alain vit' 'im?"

"Und vatch how hard ye squeeze 'im. Human's are nae sae sturdy."

"That's true," she said with a laugh. "I could probably lift him over my head with one arm."

"Methinks Kurti's still shocked vhen I fly vith 'im." Joy chuckled.

Another laugh. "Flying. I should try that."

"Kin ye do it?" she asked with interest.

"The one I hear singin', methinks," said Joy, hearing the strains of 'Billy Peddle' on the breeze.

Vanya heard it too; it was melodic and just a little offkey. She recognized the man as one of the many visitors the bed and breakfast had had in the past week.

"And how do you propose we do that?"

Joy chuckled and went into a long, flat dive, intent on buzzing him.
